Admissions Committee

Full-Time Basic Science

Mary Amundson, MA, Assistant Professor, Center for Rural Health

Ms. Amundson directs the Area Health Education Center and recruitment programs at the Center for Rural Health. She is interested in recruitment and retention of health care providers to address access to health care in underserved and frontier areas. Ms. Amundson serves on the National Health Service Corps Advisory Council. At UND she has served on the Psychiatric Mental & Health Nursing Advisory Committee for the College of Nursing and the SMHS Admissions Committee.

Arlinda Kristjanson, PhD, Associate Professor, Clinical Neuroscience

Dr. Kristjanson is the project manager for the National Study of Health and Life Experiences of Women and project coordinator for the GENACIS project (Gender, Alcohol, and Culture: An International study)   She participates in medical education as a Patient-Centered Learning (PCL) facilitator. Previously she was a Human Behavior facilitator (1995 – 1997). She has served on the UND Conflict of Interest/Scientific Misconduct Committee and as a Family Mediator through the UND Conflict Resolution Center.

Eric L. Johnson, M.D.

Dr. Johnson started at the SMHS in 1994 as Clinical faculty member. In July of 2008, he was appointed to an Academic position where he currently serves as Assistant Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine. Dr. Johnson is the Physician Consultant to the North Dakota Tobacco Quitline and is the Assistant Medical Director of the Altru Diabetes Center. Areas of specialty for Dr. Johnson include Diabetes.

Julie Rickert, Psy. D.

Dr. Rickert joined the Center for Family Medicine-Minot as a Clinical Psychologist and Assistant Professor in 2003. Her professional interests include mental health in OB/GYN as well as fostering health behavior change. Dr. Rickert teaches, precepts and mentors residents. She is the course director for the behavioral health rotation and directs the residency’s behavioral health curriculum.

Sharon Wilsnack, PhD, Professor, Clinical Neuroscience

Dr. Wilsnack is Principle Investigator of a 20-year longitudinal study of drinking and problem drinking in U.S. women and a 40-country multinational study of gender, alcohol, and culture, both funded by the NIH. She lectures to first and second year medical students. Recent service includes the SMHS Research Committee, Student Performance and Recognition Committee, Search Committees for the SMHS Dean (1994-95); the Chair, Family Medicine; and Associate Dean for Research, UND Faculty Lecture Series Committee, Faculty Seed Money Program Committee; and Search Committee, UND President (1998-99).

John Watt, PhD, Associate Professor, Anatomy and Cell Biology

Dr. Watt investigates the ciliary neurotrophic factor as a survival factor for magnocellular neurosecretory neurons in vivo and how ketogenic diet and ketone bodies increase neuroprotective brain bioenergetics. His work is funded through the SMHS COBRE (NIH P20). He currently supervises one MD/PhD student, two PhD candidates and one MS candidate and serves as director of the MD/PhD program as well as the Research Experience for Medical Students (REMS) program. Dr. Watt facilitates in Patient-Centered Learning (PCL) and provides labs and lectures in the first year medical curriculum. He also contributes to BIMD 500 and co-instructs ANAT 515 Histology.

Min Wu, PhD, Assistant Professor, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

Research in Dr. Wu’s laboratory is centered on understanding the molecular mechanism of acute lung injury (DNA damage and repair) and host-pathogen interaction (lipid rafts in bacterial internalization). He has been funded by the American Heart Association and intramural sources. Dr. Wu facilitates in Patient-Centered Learning (PCL) and lectures to first year medical students and participates in graduate education with teaching responsibilities in BIMD 500 and graduate courses in BMB. He has been the major advisor to 1 PhD and 1 MS student. Recent service includes the University Senate and UND Scholarly Committee, and the UND Business and Biotech Consulting Committee.

Thad Rosenberger, PhD, Assistant Professor, Pharmacology, Physiology & Therapeutics

The long-term goal of research in Dr. Rosenberger’s lab is to understand the extent by which alterations in lipid-mediated signal transduction contribute to the progression of injury associated with neuroinflammation. His work is funded through the SMHS COBRE (NIH P20). He facilitates in Patient-Centered Learning (PCL) and lectures to first year medical students and participates in graduate education with teaching responsibilities in the core course BIMD 500 and graduate courses in PPT. Recent service includes membership on the UND Senate, serving as senate representative on the UND Planning and Budget committee, and Senate Executive Committee (ex-officio voting member). He has served as an ad hoc reviewer of Seed Money grant proposals for SMHS and UND ROTC committee (chair).

Full-Time Clinical Science - NW

Kim Krohn, M.D.

Dr. Krohn is Associate Professor at the Center for Family Medicine in Minot. She has been at the Center since 1995; first as a student, then resident and now as a faculty member and Director of the Program. Dr. Krohn’s interests include the quality improvement of medical education and of clinical care and the practice of broad spectrum family medicine. Dr. Krohn has served on a number of committees including GMEC, CPT and FAC.

Stephen Stripe, M.D.

Dr. Stripe is Associate Director of the Center for Family Medicine in Minot and was recently promoted to Associate Professor. His interests include rural healthcare and rural emergency medicine. Dr. Stripe is course director for electives in areas such as urology and dermatology. He is also a preceptor and Nursing Home Coordinator for residents as well as Dermatology Clerkship Coordinator.

Byron Danielson, M.D.

Dr. Danielson is Professor and Vice Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine and has been with the SMHS since 1977. He serves as preceptor to Residents, third and fourth year medical students as well as lectures to medical students on nephrology rotations. Dr. Danielson has served on several committees including CPT and most recently on MCC.

William Becker, M.D. , Ph.D.

Dr. Becker is the Director of Surgical Education at the SMHS. He received his MD and PhD from the University of Minnesota and completed his general surgery residency training there as well. He is board-certified in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care with special interests in burns and surgical critical care/trauma. Dr. Becker has been with the SMHS from 1992-2001 and 2001-present where he has served on several committees including GMEC and the Research Committee.

Full-Time Health Science

LaVonne Fox, Ph.D. , Assistant Professor

Dr. Fox is Graduate Director in the Department of Occupational Therapy at the SMHS.   Her responsibilities include mentoring graduate students, lecturing and grading in several courses and fieldwork assignments, and mentoring adjunct faculty in the OT program at the Casper College campus. She is  has been active in departmental, university and UND-SMHS committees including Search Committees, COE Women's Leadership, Clinical Laboratory Science (CLS) Program Evaluation, and serves as an alternate member of the IRB (2008-09).

Beverly Johnson, DSci, Associate Professor

Dr. Johnson is Director of Clinical Education in the Department of Physical Therapy at UND-SMHS.  She is board certified as a Geriatric Certified Specialist and is a credentialed trainer for the American Physical Therapy Association Clinical Instructor Education and Credentialing Program.   Dr. Johnson has been active in departmental, university and UND-SMHS committees including various search committees, Bylaws committee, FAC Council, Risk Management Committee between 1996 - 2004.

Sonia Zimmerman, Ph.D. , Associate Professor

Dr. Zimmerman has been active on numerous departmental, university and UND-SMHS committees including NDUS Allied Health Common Course Numbering Advisory Committee, Senate Special Review Committee, UND Student Academic Standards Committee, Advisory Committee to Instructional Development (2008-2009).

Brij Singh, PhD, Associate Professor, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

Dr. Singh lectures in the graduate core course BIMD 500 and recently served on the BIMD re-organization committee. He is the course director/lecturer in BMB graduate courses. He has chaired the advisory committees for 2 PhD and 1 MS students, and been a member of 9 others. In medical education Dr. Singh lectures and facilitates in Year 1 and serves on a block design team. Recent committee service includes Graduate Curriculum Committee, Research Committee, and ad hoc reviewer of Seed Money grant proposals for SMHS.

Siegfried Detke, PhD, Associate Professor, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

Dr. Detke is the Associate Graduate Director in BMB and is the course director/lecturer in BMB graduate courses. He lectures in the graduate core course BIMD 500. He has chaired the advisory committees for 1 PhD and 2 MS students, and participated on numerous other advisory committees. In medical education Dr. Detke lectures and facilitates in Year 1 and serves on a block design team (chair of the Block 1 design team 2008/2009). Committee service includes Student Performance and Recognition Committee and the Medical Curriculum Committee. He participates in undergraduate education as course director and lecturer in BMB 301.

Seema Somji, PhD, Assistant Professor, Pathology

Dr. Somji participates in BMB graduate seminars and journal clubs and lectures in BMB 533. She has chaired the advisory committees for 2 PhD and 1 MS students and been a member of several other committees. In medical education Dr. Somji lectures and facilitates in Years 1 and 2 and serves on a block design team. Committee service includes the Library Committee and ad hoc reviewer of Seed Money grant proposals for SMHS.

Ann Flower, PhD, Associate Professor, Microbiology and Immunology

Dr. Flower is the Director of Graduate Studies in Microbiology and Immunology and course director/lecturer in several graduate courses. She has chaired the advisory committees for 1 PhD and 8 MS students, and been a member of 17 other committees. She lectures in the graduate core course BIMD 500 and served on Graduate Core Course (BIMD) organization and implementation committee in 1998. In medical education Dr. Flower presents lectures and labs in Years 1 and 2, facilitates, and serves on a block design team. She conducts an average of 2 Facilitator Training sessions per year. Committee service has included FAC, Center of Excellence in Women’s Health Leadership Committee, SPRC Special Pool, Chair Search for Microbiology and Immunology, and MD/PhD Steering Committee.

Cathy Ziegler PT, ATC, Instructor

Ms.   Ziegler is an instructor in the Division of Sports Medicine of the Department of Family Medicine.   She is the clinic coordinator for the Center for Sports Medicine with responsibilities of direct out-patient care, staff supervision, reimbursement, provider agreements, marketing and other administrative duties.   Ms. Ziegler is a clinical instructor for residents & 4th year medical students in Sports Medicine rotations, physical therapy students, and graduate and undergraduate athletic training students. Ms Ziegler’s academic responsibilities include instruction in athletic training technique and laboratory courses.   She has also assisted with accreditation preparation.   Ms. Zeigler has served on the Health Sciences Curriculum Committee.

Cindy Flom-Meland, PhD, PT

Dr. Flom- Meland is an Assistant Professor in the Physical Therapy Department and is the Assistant Academic Coordinator of Clinical Education. Dr. Flom-Meland is an APTA Board Neurology Certified Specialist with responsibilities for teaching in the PT neurological curriculum.   She also is a credentialed clinical instructor and coordinates student clinical experiences.   She also has been active on numerous departmental and university committees, has facilitator the Inter-professional Health Care courses since 2006, and has been an item writer for the national Neurologic Specialty Exam since 2004.   Dr. Flom-Meland has been with UND-SMHS since 1998.

Neena Thomas-Eapen, M.D.

Dr. Thomas-Eapen is an Associate Director and Assistant Professor in the Center for Family Medicine-Minot since 2007. She is a graduate of the SMHS’s Residency Program and is board-certified in Family Medicine. Her special interest is in Integrative Medicine. Dr. Thomas-Eapen teaches and mentors students and residents at CFM-Minot.

Abe Sahmoun, Ph.D.

Dr. Sahmoun is Assistant Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine. He earned his degree from Mediterranean University, France. Dr. Sahmoun teaches second year and third year medical students and he mentors clinical epidemiological projects for the medical students and the residents. He also serves on the Departmental Research Committee and is the state education liaison between UND-SMHS and the University of Minnesota.

Part-Time Clinical Science

Wayne Breitwieser, M.D.

Dr. Breitwieser is Clinical Professor of Internal Medicine and has been with the SMHS since 1982. He received his MD from the University of Iowa College of Medicine and is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Disease, with a special interest in critical care medicine. He lectures frequently and provides precepting for students and residents. Dr. Breitwieser has served on several committees including MCC and the Library Committee.

Tze Shien Lo, M.D.

Dr. Lo is Associate Professor of Internal Medicine. Dr. Lo provides infectious diseases teaching to faculty, internal medicine residents, transitional year residents and internal medicine students. He has also acted as a research mentor to residents and students. Dr. Lo has been with the SMHS since 2000.


Medical Curriculum Committee (MCC)

Kathy Sukalski, PhD, Associate Professor, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

Dr. Sukalski is Biochemistry and Molecular Biology’s Director of Education. She facilitates in Patient-Centered Learning (PCL) and lectures to first year medical students and served as the PCL Block 1 Director from 1997 – 2002. She lectures in the graduate core course BIMD 500 and in undergraduate BMB (course director BMB 301 1998-2007). She is the co- facilitator of BIMD 516 Responsible Conduct of Research (2007 – present). Recent service includes the SMHS Medical Curriculum Committee, Admissions (alternate), and the UND Student Relations Committee (co-chair).

Eric Murphy, PhD, Associate Professor, Pharmacology, Physiology & Therapeutics

Dr. Murphy facilitates in Patient-Centered Learning (PCL) and lectures to first and second year medical students, in addition to lecturing in a variety of graduate and undergraduate courses. He serves as course director for 2 PPT graduate courses. In his research lab he supervises postdoctoral associates and numerous undergraduate research students. Recent service includes the SMHS Faculty Academic Council, UND Intellectual Property Committee, UND Intellectual Property Disclosure Committee, and the ROTC Committee (chair).

Jim Porter, PhD, Associate Professor, Pharmacology, Physiology & Therapeutics

Dr. Porter facilitates in Patient-Centered Learning (PCL) and lectures to first and second year medical students. He has been the course coordinator/administrator of Biochemical and Molecular Mechanisms of Pharmacology and Toxicology, and the course coordinator or co-coordinator of Graduate Medical Pharmacology 501. He has supervised six PhDs, 1 MS, and undergraduate research students. Service includes the SMHS Medical Curriculum Committee, Health Sciences Curriculum Committee, and Associate/Assistant Dean for Academic/Faculty Affairs Search Committee.

Clinical Science

Jennifer Raum, M.D.

Dr. Raum is Clinical Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine and has been with the School since 2008. She graduated from SMHS in 2001 and is board-certified in Internal Medicine. She completed Internal Medicine Residency training at Georgetown University Hospital and served as Chief Medical Resident. Dr. Raum participates in the planning and implementation of the graduate and undergraduate educational programs within the Department of Internal Medicine. Dr. Raum also serves as the Associate Clerkship Director.

Roxanne Vaughan, PhD, Professor, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

Dr Vaughan investigates the structure-function properties of the dopamine transporter with research support from the NIH (R01). She mentors graduate students and undergraduates in the research lab, lectures to graduate and first year medical students and facilitates in Patient-Centered Learning (PCL). Recent service includes the SMHS Graduate Curriculum Committee, Research Committee, SMHS Promotion and Tenure Committee, Nominating Committee and ad hoc committees including search committees for chair and dean positions.

Richard Wilsnack, PhD, Professor, Clinical Neuroscience

Richard Clarens, Pharm. D.

Dr. Clarens is Associate Professor in Family and Community Medicine and has been with the SMHS for 29 years. He has lectured in Bock V, VI, VII and VII as well as given lectures to Health Sciences’ students. Additionally, Dr. Clarens facilitates Patient-Centered Learning (PCL) during Block VII. Currently, Dr. Clarens serves on SPRC and is on the Medical Subcommittee of the IRB.

Byron Danielson, M.D.

John Martsolf, M.D.

Dr. Martsolf is the Chief of the Division of Medical Genetics. He came to the SMHS in 1978 and during his tenure here he has served in a number of capacities, but most recently on the Department of Pediatrics Committee on Promotion and Tenure as well as the School’s Committee on Promotion and Tenure. In addition to that, Dr. Martsolf served on the Block 1 Curriculum Design Committee, the Library Committee and the Research Committee.

Roger Schauer, M.D.

Dr. Schauer is ROME Director and Associate Professor in Family and Community Medicine. Dr. Schauer’s teaching includes facilitator for Patient-Centered Learning (PCL) group, Course Director of the Family Medicine Clerkship. He also lecturers to medical students and is facilitator for the small group Inter-Professional Health Care Course. Dr. Schauer has served on numerous committees, but most recently, CPT, Admissions and FAC.


Research Committee

Brij Singh, PhD, Associate Professor, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

Dr. Singh studies the regulation of the molecular mechanisms involved in Ca2+ signaling, especially those involving emptying of intracellular Ca2+ stores. He has funding from the NIH (R01 and P01), NSF, EPSCoR and intramural sources. He participates on study sections for the NIH, NSF, DOD, and private foundations. Recent committee service includes Graduate Curriculum Committee, Research Committee, and ad hoc reviewer of Seed Money grant proposals for SMHS.

Matthew Nilles, PhD, Associate Professor, Microbiology and Immunology

Dr. Nilles studies bacterial pathogenesis; investigating mechanisms of toxin delivery and host-pathogen interaction. His work has been funded by the NIH (R01 and U01), Air Force Research Labs, and intramural sources. He has participated in grant reviewing including study sections for NIH. Recent service includes the SMHS Nominating Committee, Graduate Curriculum Committee, the UND Institutional Biosafety Committee (Vice-Chair) and UND Invention Disclosure Committee.

Ann Flower, PhD, Associate Professor, Microbiology and Immunology

Dr. Flower studies rRNA modification, ribosome function, gene regulation, and bacterial protein export. She has been funded by the NIH (R15), the NSF (CAREER Award and renewal), and DoD (DoD EPSCoR). She has reviewed grants for the NSF both ad hoc and on panels, as well ad hoc reviews for other organizations. Recent committee service includes FAC, Search committee for the Chair Microbiology and Immunology, MD/PhD steering committee, and the SMHS Committee on Promotion and Tenure.


Student Performance Recognition Committee (SPRC)

Full-Time Basic Science

Colin Combs, PhD, Associate Professor Pharmacology, Physiology and Therapeutics

Dr. Combs facilitates in Patient-Center Learning (PCL) and lectures to first year medical students. He serves on the Block 3 design team, is course director for PPT 535, and chairs the PPT Comprehensive Examination Design Committee. He has supervised 4 PhDs, 1 MS, and numerous undergraduate research students. Recent committee service includes two SMHS chair search committees, the Graduate Curriculum Committee (chair 2007/08), and the UND Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee.

Othman Ghribi, PhD, Assistant Professor Pharmacology, Physiology and Therapeutics

Dr. Ghribi facilitates in Patient Centered-Learning (PCL) and lectures to first year medical students. He recently joined the Block 5 Design Team and is course director for PPT 511. He supervises 2 PhDs, numerous undergraduate research students and is a mentor for REMS (Research Experience for Medical Students (Summer 2008). Recent service includes the UND Faculty Senate and UND Institutional Animal care and use Committee.

Randy Szlabick, M.D.

Dr. Szlabick is the Associate Program Director of the general surgery residency program and Assistant Professor of Surgery. He received his MD from Wayne State School of Medicine. Dr. Szlabick is board-certified in General Surgery and also in Surgical Critical Care. Dr. Szlabick joined the SMHS in 2008.

Jacqueline Quisno, M.D.

Dr. Quisno is Assistant Professor and Associate Program Director at the Center for Family Practice-Bismarck. She received her MD from the University of Washington and completed her Family Practice Residency at UND Family Practice Center in Bismarck. Dr. Quisno’s interests include Native American health and women’s health particularly in the area of OB and Pediatrics.
